Export veterinary certification has been the normal process while exporting live animals and products of animal origin (POAO) from the UK to third Countries outside the EU. Export veterinary certification was not needed when trading from UK to other EU Member State as there was free trade of goods among EU Members States. The way trading of live animals and/or POAO with EU Member States has changed as UK became a third country for the EU. This means trading of goods is considered an export which, in the case of live animals and/or POAO, requires veterinary certification.

What is veterinary certification?

Veterinary certification is a process carried out by Veterinary Surgeons, members of the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons (RCVS), which provide assurances and guarantees that the certified product(s) comply with the required standards of animal and public health and, animal welfare stipulated by the importing country(ies). It requires Veterinary Surgeons to complete an Export Health Certificate (EHC).

Export veterinary certification is a very specialised subject which requires highly trained and qualified Veterinary Surgeons with knowledge on the certification process, country requirements, legislation and the product(s) manufacturing sector of the industry.

Its main objective is to avoid transferring potential animal and/or public health diseases to safeguard the importing country(ies). Veterinary certification does also provide confidence to importing countries to maintain the international trade of live animals and/or POAO.
